It especially occurs in young people during
their "growth spurt" and typically, such individuals are above
average height for their age.
As with all cancers, early detection is the essence, as delay
means the cancer might spread to other parts of the body. In the case of
Osteosarcoma diagnosis involves X-rays, CT and MRI scans.

The cause of
Osteosarcoma is still unknown. In the U.K. over the last 20
years, while survival rates relating to other cancers have
improved significantly, Osteosarcoma reaearch has remained
virtually static. Dr. Robert Grimer, Consultant Oncologist
Birmingham Royal Orthopaedic Hospital says "there is an URGENT
need for new treatments to be developed that are more effective
and kinder to the patients themselves".
Osteosarcoma is a form of bone
cancer. It can occur anywhere in the body, though most
commonly in the limbs, particularly at the ends of the
bones where new tissue is forming.
