Osteosarcoma
Information.

It especially occurs in young people during their "growth spurt" and typically, such individuals are above average height for their age.

As with all cancers, early detection is the essence, as delay means the cancer might spread to other parts of the body. In the case of Osteosarcoma diagnosis involves X-rays, CT and MRI scans.

The cause of Osteosarcoma is still unknown. In the U.K. over the last 20 years, while survival rates relating to other cancers have improved significantly, Osteosarcoma reaearch has remained virtually static. Dr. Robert Grimer, Consultant Oncologist Birmingham Royal Orthopaedic Hospital says "there is an URGENT need for new treatments to be developed that are more effective and kinder to the patients themselves".

Osteosarcoma is a form of bone cancer. It can occur anywhere in the body, though most commonly in the limbs, particularly at the ends of the bones where new tissue is forming.

Once decisions have been reached regarding wheather or not the cancer has spread to other parts of the body and wheather or not surgical removal of the tumour is possible, the treatment plan for Osteosarcoma can involve a combination of chemotherapy, salvage surgery, amputation or radiation
.

Given the urgent need for new research, the Claire Coiley Trust was set up in 2003. All funds raised will be devoted exclusively to this much hoped for new research, just as Claire herself wished.
